this great song was written by leon russell.leon also performed it as well as the carpenters. it seemed like they were trying to make it a donny athaway song just because his daughter is in the houseband.

Absolutely. I was hoping Paris would say she was doing GK's version, but instead she went for over the top. I actually think a lot of David Foster's advice worked against the singers. His style is slick and over-produced power pop. Randy was dead-on to point out the bad arrangement to Elliot's song (if DF had any input on that one).

Nearly a dozen people have recorded it, but Hathaway's version is widely considered to the be definitive version. Elliot never said Hathaway wrote it, just that he admired 'Hathaway's music,' which in this case means music associated with him, or music he had big hits with. Saying it is 'a Donny Hathaway song' isn't incorrect, by that definition.

Donny *made* that song...... Eliot won some major points with me for praising Donny. I have listened to him for many years and feel he has been overlooked for too long. He was a genius.
