They are WAY too LOUD and are drowning out the vocals of the remaining contestants. I really don't think I'm imaginging this. I had such a hard time hearing a lot of the vocals tonight. It's like the band is off in their own world.

I disagree. The contestants' voices were so distinct from the background music that their shabby singing was unmistakable. I don't know if it's the sound engineering or something, but most of them sounded peachy and hesitant.

You didn't imagine it, I was thinking the same thing. It's like, gee I think so and so is doing really well tonight, but I can't be sure because I can hardly hear them over the damn music!

The band is the band, it's the sound engineering that causes it to drown out the vocals. One little knob ...

Amen. The band just plays. It's up some wanker in an engineering booth somewhere to make sure the vocals are up in the mix. Having said that, it always sounds reasonably well-done here, so it might be how your Fox affiliate broadcasts the signal. We have certain channels on our feed the sound is ALWAYS bad on. The night NBC ran the pilot of 'Surface' back in Sept I almost turned it off in frustration because to get the dialogue loud enough to hear what they were saying caused the sound fx and music to distort the speakers. An isolated incident with that show, but it happens. As far as the band goes, I think they are freakin' great, and the backup singers, too.

Keeping in voice at a consitent sound level is the job of the singer. If the contestants could sing it would help.

Faulting the band is idiotic. It's ridiculous. We don't really expect every member of the band to adjust their own instrument do we? Behind the singer and the band are the sound engineers. They're the ones we should be looking at when something is wrong. It's not an easy task. First, they have to consider how the overall sound goes in the studio, then outside of it like the one you'll hear on your TV, etc.

Yes, I guess I was blaming the band for something that is out of their control. It's too bad that it sounds so distorted to me this year (don't recall noticing this before) because I'm afraid it may possibly be affecting the way some people are voting.

If they have your mike set so that a Harley at full throttle can't cut the mix, Pavorotti with a hand grenade up his bum is not going to be heard.
